Paw & Nose Protection Balm is a thick wax-and-butter balm that sits on the surface as a barrier — before the walk to keep salt off, after the walk to put moisture back.
A barrier that goes on in ten seconds
- Wax base that stays put: Beeswax, carnauba and candelilla form a film on the pad instead of soaking straight in, which is what makes it a barrier rather than a lotion.

How to use
- Before a winter walk: Rub a thin layer over each pad and between the toes. Let it set for a minute before you go out.
- After a winter walk: Rinse the salt off with warm water, dry the paws completely, then apply again. Salt sealed under balm is worse than no balm.
- For a dry nose: A small dab, worked in with a fingertip. Most dogs lick it off, which is why the ingredient list matters.
- Apply at a quiet moment — after a meal, before sleep — so your dog is not licking it straight off.
- Close the tin and keep it at room temperature. It softens in heat and hardens in cold.
Good to know
- This is a cosmetic barrier balm, not a medicine. It does not treat infection, allergy, or an existing wound.
- Cracked pads that bleed, a nose that is crusting or losing pigment, or persistent licking of one paw need a veterinarian, not a balm.
- Some dogs lick it off immediately. Apply at a settled moment and it stays on longer.
- Contains beeswax and plant oils. Stop use if you see redness or irritation.
- Not a substitute for rinsing salt off after a walk, and not a substitute for boots in deep snow or on gritted roads.
- Texture varies with room temperature — softer in a warm house, firmer in a cold one.

The problem
You get home, and the road salt keeps working on the pads for hours after the walk is over.
Two things dry a dog out in winter, and they come from opposite directions. Outside, de-icing salt and grit pull moisture out of the pads and keep working long after you are home. Inside, forced-air heating does the same to the nose.
The damage is slow, so it gets missed. By February the pads are rough and splitting at the edges, the nose is crusted, and your dog has started licking one paw more than the others.
